With social networking taking over the world and every man and his dog using it in one way or another, surely all the top ski resorts will have joined the bandwagon by now. As I am sure you are aware most skiers and boarders see their snow-filled holidays as much a necessity and addiction as anything else in their lives. We love to know where the best snow is, what’s going on in our favourite resort and when our usual traveling companions will be skiing.

With Facebook one of the most visited sites on the internet and the likes of Twitter and Bebo growing by the day, most tech savvy skiers will have access to at least one online social network. With online travel agents making the booking process easier we are spending more time researching and reading about skiing and snowboarding online.

Whether booking holidays, checking our resort reviews, or signing up to snow alerts all the info we need is out there. I decided to have a look into the so called big resorts to see who we can ‘add as a friend’, ‘like’ or ‘tweet’. With growing numbers of people using Facebook and Twitter to organise their holidays with friends there had to be a presence of info out there to help with our choices.

The first thing I noticed is when looking at the big North-American resorts such as Whistler, Breckenrige and Aspen they all use Twitter, Facebook, RSS feeds and weekly newsletters to maximum effect. With minimal effort you can find out where the snow, best deals and biggest parties will be.

In contrast the European resorts are a little further behind. The Three Valleys has so far abstained from social networking, with exception to the independently run LaTania.co.uk (though anyone who knows La Tania wouldn’t expect any less from Toffa). The Espace Killy have joined in the world of Facebook with posts in English, whereas you may need to brush up on your French when looking for your Les Arcs fix.

Below I have complied a list of the ‘big’ resorts social networking, though I will update the list with any comments you may have.

After an investment of £23 million and two years in the making, Hemel Hempstead Snow Centre will finally open its doors to the public on May 6th 2009.

Following the landing of 500mm in the Hemel Hempstead Snow Centre, conditions on the slopes expected to keep the powder in shape pretty much forever!

Boasting a 160 metre slope, along with a nursery training slope of almost 100 metres, it will be similar to other indoor skiing uk snow centres, but a much closer outlet for skiers in the South East.

There’s no better way to get ready for ski holidays on the slopes than to take the professional ski lessons offered at places just like the Hemel Hempstead Snow Centre.

They’ll also be their own version of Après-ski, with bars located close-by that give the perfect panoramic view of the action.

Sure, snow centres like this aren’t close to the real thing, but if you haven’t skied before, it’s a really good opportunity to get some practice in. Say you go to the Alps for a week and are a beginner, you’ll spend most of the holiday just picking up the ropes and just as you get the hang of it – you’ll be on your way home! Indoor skiing is great for getting that initial difficulty out of the way, so that you can fully enjoy the proper thing.

When you’re booking ski holidays, there’s nothing worse than discovering the ski passes for the area turns out to be more than you’d budgeted. Lift passes in the Alps vary in price in many ways including the date you go, the resort you’re staying in, whether you’ll be skiing across several different resorts, your age and how many days you’ll be skiing.

I figured it makes sense to have a simple table with lift pass prices broken down. That way, there’s an at-a-glance way of helping add up your ski holiday costs before booking. Please note, that resorts change their lift pass prices regularly and also taking into account that the exchange rate fluctuates, it’s very difficult to have accurate prices. As such the below are all approximations, based on 6 days in peak season. Last updated: 02 March 2009.

I will be including the cost of Canadian and US lift passes next.

So you want to work in a ski resort? There isn’t really much else that you can compare ski resort jobs to. It can be hard work sometimes, but as anyone who’s tried it will testify – it’s totally worth it. You don’t even need to have skied before to do it, as working a season on the slopes is the perfect opportunity to learn. I thought I’d whiz through the kinds of ski resort jobs on offer and how you can apply for them.

There are Two Kinds of Ski Resort

Before jumping in at the deep end, you’ll need to pick a resort. This is probably the most important part of the process. And that’s because of the distinction between large and small resorts. It all depends on what kind of atmosphere you’re looking to work in.

Jobs at large ski resorts:

+ Better and more varied skiing opportunities.

+ More bars, clubs and restaurants to try out.

- Higher costs of living.

- Less friendly due to the huge number of workers.

Jobs at small ski resorts:

+ Close-knit and involving.

+ Much cheaper.

- Small ski areas.

- Fewer amenities and facilities.

So ski resorts jobs in places such as Les Gets and Selva won’t always set alight during the après-ski and you might get bored after a while of visiting the same old places. Though there is always the opportunity of visiting a closer resort for more scope. Going back to Les Gets, for example, Morzine isn’t too far to go for a bit more variety.

The larger ski resorts such as Verbier and St Anton obviously have much more to offer in terms of both amenities and skiing, but since there are so many members of staff, they can lose the friendly feeling and cliques begin to develop. Ultimately, it can simply come down to luck of who you end up being around. But by being a little bit selective, you can increase your chances of settling in.

Who Can Work in a Ski Resort?

The skill sets required for ski resort jobs can vary from just needing a bit of common sense, to having an internationally recognised qualification. This opens the field to virtually anyone. You’ll find a whole range of people, although the most popular form of worker seems to be those on gap years or taking a break from study.

I think when you’re in the middle of Uni, it’s a really good opportunity to get something decent and exciting onto your CV. That way, when you finish studying, you’ve not only got a qualification but you’ve also got that extra bit of experience which shows you can get out into the world and try something new.

It’s not just students though and there are full-time professions out there. Working as an instructor for example is one of the most popular ski resort jobs, but you’ll need to work hard to get there and the relevant qualifications are needed. There’s also opportunities for chefs, child-minding and management which all require a little bit more than a willingness to learn.

Ultimately, anybody can (and does) work in ski resorts, but the choice available can depend on your level of education.

Types of Ski Resort Jobs

Whichever type of ski work you decide to go for, you’ll have to work hard, but some are less demanding than others. I’ve picked a few of the ski resort jobs that stand out below, but you’ll find there are plenty of other different opportunities once you go looking.

A useful tip is to do a bit of research around a role in a resort you fancy and see if you can find any forums or sites with other people’s experiences there. That way you can find out how much skiing you’ll get a chance to fit in and what kind of atmosphere is likely. Since every resort is different, it’s definitely worth seeing if others have had positive or negative experiences.

• Chalet Hosts – This is pretty much exactly what you’d expect. You host the chalet for the staying guests. This means you’ll be making breakfast, three course meals and general up-keeping around the chalet. Qualifications are sometimes need needed to apply, but often resorts provide you with cookery classes out of season, if you can’t cook. Opportunities to go skiing will come during the late mornings and early afternoons.

• Resort Reps – To do repping you need a bit of experience as you’ll not only need knowledge of the resort to refer onto guests, you’ll also need to be a reasonable skier and be conversational in at least one foreign language. This is because sometimes you’ll find yourself escorting guests around the mountain. However, at least you get a decent amount of opportunities to squeeze in a bit of skiing.

• Instructors – It’s tough to get into instructing, but due to the amount of skiing you get to do, it’s one of the ski resort jobs that just about everybody wishes they were doing. You’ll need recognised qualifications to apply.

• Nannies – Joining one of the many available child-minding companies on the slopes will require appropriate qualifications and skills. There are crèches and kids’ areas with all ages. You may be required in both the day and night to mind children, but will find gaps to hit the slopes.

• Maintenance – From plumbing to car repairs, there are all sorts of jobs that need attention on resorts. Generally handymen have to be able to drive, as response time are important. Your schedule can change day by day, you’ll probably find yourself having lots of time to ski and then suddenly being really busy.

• Chefs – Know your fondue from your raclette? This could be the role for you. There’s obviously more to it than, though. You’ll need to be able to cook for large numbers, cope under the pressure of a frenzied kitchen and plan/budget a shopping list every week. Generally you get a day off each week, where you can ski to heart’s content.

• Hotel Staff – Hotels need all kinds of staff, the most common being waiting on in the restaurants. Though, the chances are you’ll be helping with resort transfers, shopping and cleaning amongst other things. It’s a varied role without need for qualifications, but experience in hotels or knowledge of a foreign language can always give you a leg up.

• Plongeurs – How far are you willing to go in order to spend a season skiing? Pot washing isn’t that bad. Alright, it’s not got the variety of hosting or repping, but it still gets you out there.

• Bar Staff – There are always a decent number of bars that need assistance, especially in the larger resorts. You’ll need to be a keen socialite and conversational level of a foreign language is definitely a bonus. Also knowledge of the odd cocktail wouldn’t go amiss, the people demand Caipirinhas.

How to Search for Ski Resort Jobs

After deciding one or two roles you think you’d be suitable for, it’s time to start hunting. If you’ve got a particular resort you’d like to visit, try using search engines to narrow your options down. Here are a few decent places that list ski resort jobs to get you started.

Season Worker
skijobs.co.uk
Natives

Remember that you’ll still need a CV on-hand, as often you’ll have to email one over or copy bits from it for application forms. Any relevant experience helps, so make sure you don’t leave anything out!

Following in the successful footsteps of Wii Fit and Namco-Bandai’s We Ski, Nintendo Wii owners can now look forward to the delights of Shaun White Snowboarding. Due to take advantage of the Wii Balance Board in a similar way to the undermentioned games, Shaun White Snowboarding was announced recently at a Paris Press Conference.

Ubisoft will be behind the game and it’s expected to be demoed at this year’s E3 conference – an annual gaming event in Las Vegas. Players use both the board and remote at the same time to control and perform tricks.

It’s been a while since we’ve had a really decent snowboarding game, so hopefully this will fill the gap nicely. The addition of it using the balance board will definitely make it more interesting and it’s obviously nice and easy to market, too.

It will also be available on PS3 and XBox, but who wants to play with just a pad!?

This is a pretty amazing story. Norma Rowlerson took up skiing pretty late, when I say pretty late, I mean at the age of 51. And it may have taken her a while, but in the last 27 years she’s become the first ever female and first ever Brit to ski in all seven continents. Let’s face it, that puts all of us to shame.

Hailing from Crowborough in East Sussex, Rowlerson’s first experience of skiing was in Austria on a family ski holiday at the age of 51. As an aspiring travel writer, she wrote a piece which was later picked up by The Telegraph and kick-started her journalistic career.

Travelling to unusual skiing spots and writing about her experiences there became a great trait for success. Rowlerson skiing repertoire includes Sicily’s Mount Etna, Mauna Kea in Hawaii (!) and Chacaltaya, Bolivia.

Finally managing to ski in all seven continents (and yes that included Antarctica and Australasia), she called the Guinness Book of Records to see if her feat had already been achieved. Amazingly she discovered not only to be the first female to break this record but also to be the first Brit.

Norma Rowlerson now has a book available, entitled ‘Downhill To The Top’ it charts all of her adventures around the world. It’s after hearing about stuff like this that makes you think, hey it’s never too late to do anything.

Her homepage can be found here: http://www.normaskier.com/

Sometimes you come across gadgets which sound amazing but would never really be of any use to you. Linde Werdelin’s Land Instrument is different because, if you’re a keen skier, it could be incredibly valuable – perhaps even life-saving.

Move aside from the stunning Danish-designed, Swiss-produced Biformeter watch for a second, if you will, and take a look at the small square device beside it. This is the Land Instrument, a robust yet lightweight contraption which slots atop of the watch, but can also be used completely independently and clipped virtually anywhere. It’s designed to offer protection and guidance on the mountainside, by offering several important alerts and searches.

Land Instrument Condition Checks

So you’re all set to go and scope those untouched off-piste slopes of Veriber are you? The Land Instrument offers four fundamental guidance checks for getting the best and safest conditions.

• Freezing Levels – Combing the use of the built-in temperature sensor and altimeter, the Land Instrument can tell you exactly where it’s best to ski by finding the closest freezing conditions and at which altitude.

• Built-in Barometer – Taking regular readings, the barometer can not only show you the latest pressure but can also chart trends over a selected time period, enabling you to see whether the conditions look like improving or not.

• Altitude Tracking – The Land Instrument can tell you the altitude you’re currently at and will log all the information as you go, so that you can check the altitude levels across your whole trip.

• Compass – The three-axis compass takes accurate readings to keep you right on course.

Land Instrument Alerts

• Frostbite Alerts – The external temperature sensor is giving accurate readings every five seconds and alerts you with an alarm and display if you drop below -10°C.

• Avalanche Likelihood – You’re most at risk of an avalanche on 30° – 45° slopes. The Land Instrument’s inclination check can tell you exactly what angle you’re currently at and warns you if you’re in a high risk area.

Records and Logging

• Heart Rate Monitor - You can track your heart rate in real-time and it’s all recording for trend-checking afterwards. You can even enter your age, gender and weight to view your calorie requirements after a day’s skiing.

• Logs and Graphs – You can view the temperature, altitude and your heart rate in real-time and the Land Instrument logs all the data for checking afterwards. You can see for example, how many vertical metres you’ve skiied. Better yet, it can all be uploaded to your computer via USB for easier studying.

It’s pretty much all you’d need for heading off to ski in the unknown and the addition of logging all your data and being able to transfer it to your computer completes the package. It’s also an incredibly nice design, that matches with the watch perfectly. It’s just 41g, too, which means you never feel like you’re lugging around a piece of equipment and instead it can fit snugly wherever you choose.

The other big help is it’s simplistic configuration. The fact that there are just three navigation buttons, means it’s never over-complicated and they’re spaced just nicely enough to be usable with gloves on. You can view more information on the Land Instrument at Linde Werdelin‘s official site. Expect it to set you back around £1,300 .

A directory of every indoor skiing UK centre and dry ski slope, supplemented by their contact details and location on Google Maps. You might also be interested in ski lift passes.

Indoor skiing is great because you can do it at any time of year and the snow is close to the real thing. Dry ski slopes use special mesh instead of snow, but it’s often outdoor and a more open experience. Both types are scattered all over the UK, so I thought it was about time to make a directory of them all incorporating Google Maps, so they’re easy to find. This indoor skiing uk directory couldn’t have been as extensive as it is, without the help of people commenting and suggesting additions. If there are any missing, or you have an update, please add a comment and I’ll make an update.

Indoor Skiing UK

The indoor skiing UK options are mostly in England. They’re generally centres offering other entertainment such as ice skating, along with skiing. They usually use a close resemblance to actual snow that’s kept by the interior conditions, which couldn’t be maintained outside. See the map below for all your indoor skiing UK areas, remember you can zoom in to the marker’s exact location and click on the marker for directions from wherever you live.

UK Dry Ski Slopes

Besides indoor skiing uk, there are also outdoor dry ski slopes, which are artificial and made of a special mesh which resembles a ski slope. They are generally outdoor, so bear the weather in mind when you’re going. Below on the map, all the UK dry slopes are marked.
